This project spawned out of my curiosity of the human experience and the interrelation or isolation from other living things and my fear of being alone as intelligent life form and what that means for our point of existence.
Part of my creative process was studying the aesthetic of astrology diagrams and images and articulating them through mapping conventions like scale, keys, basic line work and strong use of the imagination.
I was strongly influenced, not just aesthetically but conceptually by the Golden Record and the Voyager Plaque. A copper etching flying through space, greeting intersecting intelligent life form, and introducing ourself as a species to them, with our coordinates and physical appearance. To me this says a lot about our universal isolation, but overall hope for a connection.
I used copper etching to communicate my fear. I made diagrams of the relationships in my life. I see the lines of the images like arms, reaching out for comfort from another person, to validate my own existence. These works are highly personal.
